things yourself.
Secure school records that you will need at your new
location.
Your veterinarian can advise you how to move your pets.
Take along your phone book for a directory, used phone
books are discarded anyway.
Secure prescriptions, x-rays, medical histories, and
other data for your new doctors.
Ask your doctors and dentists to recommend doctors and
dentists in your new city.
Set aside medicines and prescriptions that movers should
not pack.
Carry cash, jewelry, coin collections, etc. yourself
or send by registered mail.
Donate items you're discarding to a charitable organization
and ask for a receipt. These donations are tax deductible. Ask your
tax man for details.
Remove cash, check books, plane tickets, glasses, keys,
etc. from drawers before moving day.
Before moving, secure information for your next tax
return: interest, tax, W-2's, medical, dental, contributions and moving
expenses.
Discard bleach, gasoline, leaky containers and other
items too dangerous to transport.
Plan for items your family will need during the move.
Set them aside, label them, and instruct the movers not to load them.
Plan approximate locations for your furniture in your
new home.
Transfer funds to your new bank, empty safety deposit
vault, secure traveler's checks, etc.
Return borrowed items and ask for return of items you
have loaned out. Don't forget books.
Prepare your car for the trip to your new city. Provide
car games for the children to use.
Ask the phone company to shut off your phone the day
after moving day.
Defrost, clean and dry your refrigerator before moving
day. Leave the doors of the refrigerator open overnight before moving
day.
Prepare a map for the van driver, showing how to find
your home in the new city.
Label all cartons you pack and tell the Fridrich packers
what identification to use on the cartons they pack.
Give the van driver several phone numbers he can use
to contact you in your new city.
Contact the Chamber of Commerce in your new city for
their local information booklets.
Make a final check room by room, to be sure the van
driver has loaded all that is to go.
